Surface Tension

Surface tension is a force present within the surface layer of a liquid that causes the layer to behave as an elastic sheet. Surface tension is caused by the attraction between the molecules of the liquid.

Here we are exploring surface tension.

How many drops of water could fit on one coin?

We wrote about what we noticed.

Red Cabbage Chemistry

We were looking at different substances and trying to classify them as either an acid or a base.

Acids and bases are opposites of each other.  Acids have a low pH and bases have a high pH.

We used an indicator to see which substances were acids, neutral or a base. The indicator changed colour when it came in contact with an acid or a base.

We checked our indicator card to see if it was an acid or a base.

Hampton Hill Cross Country

Rising Water Experiment

The candle flame heats the air in the vase, and this hot air expands. Some of the expanding air escapes out from under the vase. When the flame goes out, the air in the vase cools down and the cooler air contracts. The cooling air inside of the vase creates a vacuum.
We noticed the candle went out quickly when the jar was put on top.

The water started to rise up into the jar.

We learnt about how vacuums are created.
