Ice and Salt experiment

We looked at how ice reacts when it comes into contact with salt.  The salt made the ice melt. We could hear the ice cracking as it started to melt.

Ice Bergs

We learnt about icebergs in Antarctica.

The term "iceberg" refers to chunks of ice larger than 5 metres.

We learnt that usually around 90% of the volume of an iceberg is under water.

We made our own icebergs and watched to see how they would float.

B is for blast off!

Our letter this week was the letter B.  At discovery we blasted rockets into the sky.

We had a count down - 5, 4, 3 ,2, 1, blast off!
Our rockets soared high into the sky.

How Whales Eat

We found out that there are different types of whales, there are baleen whales who have no teeth and toothed whales who have lots of sharp teeth. Baleen whales have a mouth that acts like a sieve to trap hundreds of small krill. This sieve is called baleen, baleen is made out of keratin, the same as our finger nails.

We put on our scientists' hats and experimented on how whales eat their food. We had combs that were the baleen whales and tongs that were toothed whales.

We used carrots for fish and grated cheese for Krill.

We each had a turn catching the food with tongs and combs.

We discovered baleen whales could scoop up lots of krill with one gulp.

We discovered that toothed whales could catch a fish with one bite.

Music is all around us.

Listening and playing the beat

Mrs O'Leary's Farewell Assembly

At our school assembly we said goodbye to our Principal Mrs O’Leary.  We were sad to say goodbye but wish her well on her new journey of motherhood.

We had a beautiful assembly full of smiles and tears.  Room 5 did an amazing job decorating a chair, hat and sash for Mrs O’Leary to wear.

The ESOL group presented Mrs O’Leary with a beautiful painting they had made for her baby.

Over the last few weeks everyone at school has drawn and written messages to Mrs O’Leary, a big thanks to Peveline O’Keefe who had these bound into a beautiful book for Mrs O’Leary.

Our Kapa Haka boys performed a farewell Haka.

Goodbye Mrs O'Leary, we will miss you!
